Appendix

To model post-communist regime trajectories in the triangular framework, we used the eleven dimensions shown in Part 7.2.2 (patronalism of rule, ruling party’s members, formality of institutions, ruling party’s function, dominant economic mechanism / dominant form of property, corruption, ideology, limited nature, plurality of power networks / legitimacy, autonomy of civil society, and hybrid-regime type). The eleven triangles associated with the dimensions (Figures 7.1-11) are juxtaposed on each other, yielding a map of triangles with intersections bordered by the dotted lines of all triangles. We numbered each intersection, created a table explaining which combination of dimensions each number represents, and used the numbers to outline the trajectory of every country.

For the map of triangles as well as the eleven triangles, download the following PowerPoint presentation. The meaning of each dimension and associated concepts (i.e., the coding rules) can be found in the explanatory tables next to the triangles in Part 7.2.2.

For the data of the regime trajectories, using the above-defined numbers, download the following Excel table. The data was collected via focus group talks with country experts (see Acknowledgments), supplemented by the written material cited in the book.
